International and emerging artists feature as The Glasshouse unveil their latest gig guide

The Glasshouse International Centre for Music is delighted to open its doors for the year ahead as it continues to bring world-renowned music to the North East. With a rich and diverse programme showcasing everything from globally-known acts to emerging local artists, there is something for everyone.
The international music centre will welcome fan favourites such as Belinda Carlisle (Thursday 23 February, Sage One), Self Esteem (Saturday 4 March, Sage One), and Father John Misty (Monday 13 March, Sage One), as well as hosting a live 50th anniversary performance of Mike Oldfield’s iconic masterpiece Tubular Bells (Thursday 16 February, Sage One).
Folk and traditional music fans have plenty of choice, with performers such as shanty-style choral singers Fisherman’s Friends (Saturday 4 February, Sage One), and The Magpie Arc (Friday 10 February, Sage Two) a cross-border band featuring the multi-award-winning talents and wide musical influences of Nancy Kerr, Findlay Napier, Tom Wright, Alex Hunter and Martin Simpson.
Following a sold-out European tour, RIOPY – the self-taught Franco-British pianist/composer with more than half a billion streams to his name and an album which has been at the top of the US Billboard charts for over 100 weeks – will visit Sage Two as he embarks on his first UK tour (Saturday 4 February, Sage Two).
An annual favourite, Transatlantic Sessions celebrates its 20th edition, once again drawing on the kindred traditions of Scotland, Ireland and the US, whilst continuing to break new ground. First-time guest singers, including Martha Wainwright, Liam Ó Maonlai and Karen Matheson, join the Transatlantic Sessions house band for 20th edition of this incredible roots’ music session (Wednesday 8 February, Sage One).
Mogwai, lauded as one of the definitive live acts of the last 25 years, will play to a standing Sage One audience on 12 February. Their tour, which takes them to Gateshead for the first time in over a decade, will feature tracks from Mogwai’s 2021 number one record, As The Love Continues, as well as classic Mogwai tracks from their innovative career (Sunday 12 February, Sage One).
Bearing the stamp of a masterful storyteller who “observes the world with a clinically poetic eye” (The New York Times), the utterly distinct voice of Suzanne Vega will fill Sage One in An Intimate Evening of Songs and Stories with Suzanne Vega. A leading figure of the folk-music revival of the early 1980s, her work is as unique as it was when her voice was first heard on the radio over 30 years ago (Saturday 18 February, Sage One).
A highlight of the inaugural After Dark festival, which was hosted at The Glasshouse last year, Run Logan Run are at the forefront of the pulsing UK jazz scene. Since forming in 2016, the duo (Andrew Neil Hayes, saxophone and Matt Brown, drums) have earned a reputation for explosive live performances, full of raw power and visceral energy (Saturday 18 February, Sage Two).
“One of the best new hard rock bands in the UK” (Uncut), Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs launch their fourth studio album, Land of Sleeper, recorded and mixed at Newcastle’s Blank Studios and mastered at Abbey Road Studios (Thursday 23 February, Sage Two).
Michael Lamb’s Strictly Smokin’ Big Band return to Sage Gateshead after 2022’s sell-out performance, this time featuring guest vocalist Matt Ford, previously voted ‘Best UK Male Big Band Vocalist’ (Friday 24 February, Sage Two).
Mercury-nominated pianist and composer Fergus McCreadie is, along with his trio, one of the most exciting new talents of the UK jazz scene, scooping up Scottish Album of the Year 2022 for his blend of jazz and Scottish traditional music (Friday 3 March, Sage Two).
Raised on hip hop, jazz and dance music, drummer/composer Myele Manzanza is a significant force on London’s dynamic scene of new wave jazz artists, with tours and collaborations alongside Jordan Rakei, Theo Parrish and Amp Fiddler (Saturday 4 March, Sage Two).
Award winning and Grammy nominated artist KT Tunstall comes to Gateshead following the release of her new album NUT, the seventh studio album and the last in a trilogy of albums she began recording and releasing in 2016 (Saturday 11 March, Sage One).
Fresh-faced talent Låpsley tours off the back of 2022 album Cautionary Tales of Youth, a perfect harmony between her austere, downtempo beginnings and her longstanding love of pop (Thursday 16 March, Sage Two).
Plaid, aka Ed Handley and Andy Turner, have been monumental cornerstones for any self-respecting electronic music fan since the late 80s. With 30 years with Warp Records under their belt, their recent 11th album Feorm Falorx maintains the melodicism for which they’re loved (Friday 17 March, Sage Two).
After the brilliant lockdown album release of Invitation, Hampshire-duo Ward Thomas will return to The Glasshouse once again, this time to celebrate the release of their fifth studio album Music In the Madness, which comes out on 10 March 2023 (Friday 31 March, Sage One).
Born Alex Holland in Leeds, Skinnyman is one of the few British emcees who needs almost no introduction. Having grown up in Finsbury Park, North London, Skinny grew up in a cultural melting pot and has since immersed himself in the musical culture of reggae and dancehall (Friday 31 March, Sage Two).
Mike & The Mechanics are Genesis founding member Mike Rutherford, one of the UK’s most prolific R&B singers Andrew Roachford, and Canadian-born singer Tom Howar. The ‘Refueled!’ Tour showcases their latest critically acclaimed album Out of the Blue, alongside some Genesis favourites (Thursday 20 April, Sage One).
Known for their phenomenal live shows, Grammy-nominated folk-rockers Big Thief will visit Sage One after the hugely successful release of their monumental 20-track album Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You (Wednesday 5 April, Sage One) and New Zealand indie-folk singer/songwriter Aldous Harding visits Gateshead after “strange, sublime” fourth album Warm Chris (Saturday 22 April, Sage One).
The Grammy-winning duo of Rhiannon Giddens and Francesco Turrisi will return to The Glasshouse with their unique combination of banjo, fiddle, piano, and tambourine spanning traditions from Africa, the Middle East, southern Europe and the Americas (Saturday 29 April, Sage One).
2023 will see The Glasshouse continue their partnership with award-winning North East arts organisation GemArts to co-programme three special concerts. Experience deeply moving contemporary devotional Persian Sufi music, Rumi poetry and dance from highly acclaimed tanbour maestro, multi-instrumentalist, and educator Seyed Ali Jaberi and the Hamdel Ensemble (Friday 17 February, Sage Two).
Composer, producer and sitarist Jonathan Mayer performs beautiful ragas to celebrate the festival of Holi and the coming of Spring, love and new life in Riverside Ragas: The Jonathan Mayer Sitar Ensemble (Friday 10 March, Sage Two).
Sage Two will play host to an evening of Indian Classical Music and Dance in Riverside Ragas: Abishek Borker & Saberi Misra, featuring a sarod recital and Kathak dance performance (Friday 28 April, Sage Two).
The From The Glasshouse series will continue in 2023, bringing audiences a garden of musical delights including homegrown talent, wildflowers from further afield, and brand-new music which has been lovingly nurtured in Sage Gateshead’s iconic glass building.
From The Glasshouse #9, which was co-programmed with The Glasshouse’s Young Programmers group, features performances from Leeds-based quintet Yaatri and up and coming bedroom-pop artist Cosial (Thursday 16th February, Sage Two).
Curated in conjunction with BBC Introducing North East, From The Glasshouse #10 features indie singer-songwriter India Arkin, who was recently the first signing to HMV’s new vinyl imprint. Also on the bill are The Peevie Wonders, a high energy colourful four piece who sold out their first headline show back in August 2022.
